Can you remember the first time you failed IPPT (the year)?
That was my first IPPT during my Full time National Service.
What do you think caused your fitness to slide from NSF days to the time you failed IPPT?
I was overweight and unfit back then.
What is your most recent IPPT result / score?
Gold, 92 points
Describe the turning (decision) point in your life that made you start on a journey to improve your fitness?
Just before I was enlisted, I was suffering from a constant headache and I went for a medical check up. It was then I realised that I had hypertension. Shortly after, I was enlisted and the systematic approach of SAF helped build my fitness gradually.
What were your top 2 or 3 motivators for getting fit again?
Being healthy and fit for myself and my family is definitely the top motivator.
Being a role model and setting a good example to my men.
Self satisfaction of getting Gold for IPPT and reaping the reward of the incentive.
What helped you to push through the difficulties when you decided to become fitter?
At that point of time, I set a goal for myself to get into OCS and the main criteria was being able to get at least a silver for IPPT. Having a goal really drives someone forward but of course, the goal must be reasonable and achievable. Being fat before, the thought of going back to my past unfit self scares me a lot as well.
What exercises did you do in the first and second month of getting back into shape?
Mainly running. Start with a short distance and increase progressively. I also bought a pull up bar and use it everyday.
Was it difficult when you tried to improve your fitness once again?
Definitely. There are many aspects that will slow or even stop your progress. Knee pains and illnesses often disrupt the exercise regime.
Was it worth it?
For sure! I lost quite a lot of weight, look better and I am able to keep up with my kids!
What would you say to encourage NSmen who are in RT and struggle to pass IPPT?
Do not find an excuse for yourself to avoid exercising. A 30 min slow run is better than no run. IPPT is only a test. It's your own health that is more important and once you can control your own health, passing IPPT will not be a difficult task.
