Behaviour Change

We're stronger together

When it comes to helping our NSmen enhance their IPPT scores, we must embrace a diverse range of tools to ignite enthusiasm and provide unwavering support for behavioral change. Restricting ourselves to just one or two methods severely limits our capacity to inspire and guide our NSmen and the individuals under our care.

Prior to expecting results from our NSmen, it is imperative that we equip them with the necessary resources, encouragement, and assistance to cultivate social environments where they can thrive and continually progress in their health and fitness journey.

You may have come across the notion of employing a "carrot and stick" approach to boost IPPT scores. While external motivation and deterrents do hold significance, their impact pales in comparison to the strength of an individual's internal drive.

It is absolutely necessary to incorporate IPPT incentives and penalties for non-compliance or absence from IPPT or RT. These measures must undoubtedly be in place.

However, imagine if you had the opportunity to engage in conversations with all the officers under your supervision who have made remarkable improvements in their IPPT scores. You would likely discover that many of them were driven by a personal determination that may have had little to do with rewards or consequences.

Harnessing the power of intrinsic motivation is a potent force that can propel individuals to surpass their own expectations. It goes beyond external factors and taps into the depths of personal commitment and passion.

By cultivating an environment that encourages self-discovery and fosters a sense of purpose, we can empower our officers to embark on transformative fitness journeys that extend far beyond compliance and regulations.

Imagine yourself as the principal of a secondary school, striving to enhance academic test scores. Merely emphasizing the importance of tests and the need for improved scores won't yield significant progress. Instead, you would embark on a journey of interventions designed to influence those scores positively.

Engaging all stakeholders—the teachers, students, parents, and the school's senior administration—is crucial for achieving your goals collectively.

Consider the array of measures you would undertake:

1) Nurturing a genuine love for learning and fostering curiosity among students.

2) Sharing inspiring stories of individuals who have successfully improved their test scores, fuelling the belief that change is possible.

3) Helping each person find their personal motivation, igniting their inner drive to excel.

4) Offering guidance and counselling to those struggling with managing their lives and aligning their priorities.

5) Providing additional educational support from our dedicated teachers, including increased one-on-one consultations with students.

6) Encouraging the formation of small study groups comprising individuals with different ability levels, fostering peer teaching and support.

7)Enlisting the support of parents to cultivate daily habits that nurture their child's academic success.

8) Recognising and incentivising teachers who dedicate their efforts to developing and supporting the aforementioned interventions.

As leaders in the Singapore Police Force, Singapore Civil Defence and the Singapore Armed Forces, we have the privilege of influencing the lives of those entrusted to our care.

We need a variety of approaches to influence behaviour change.

Let us embrace this responsibility with unwavering enthusiasm, thoughtful guidance, and a hopeful outlook.

Together, we can inspire our officers to not only excel in their IPPT scores but also embark on a lifelong pursuit of physical well-being, unlocking their full potential both personally and professionally.
